Landscapes
2017 - 2024
I have been painting outdoors since 2012. I don't know another way to get to know a landscape quite as well. When painting on location, I closely observe the space I’m in, and I become part of the scene I'm painting. My senses are exposed to all the space has to offer beyond sight - including sounds, smells, textures - and these first-hand experiences impact the outcome of my painting. I try to capture the essence of being in a particular place, in a particular season, at a particular time of day. Color relationships and paint texture are important parts of my work, and they help to convey not only the story of place, but also the energy I experience in that place.
Most of my landscape paintings are painted on location. These plein air paintings sometimes lead to larger studio paintings. Other studio paintings are done from photographs I’ve taken, combined with memories of being present in the environment. Landscapes done while traveling can be found in my Road Trips collection.
