Snowscapes
2018 - 2025
Some of my most rewarding (and invigorating!) plein air painting experiences have been in winter, when the snow lays thickly, the wind blows bitingly, and the sun’s bold shine isn’t strong enough to save me from the cold. The rewards of painting in the snow cannot be replicated by snapping a photo to use as a source in the studio. It is physically (as in, according to the principles of physics) impossible for a camera to capture all the colors the eye can see. This is true in all seasons, but the subtlety of the colors of light on snow is a particularly nuanced visual experience, available in-person only. However, it is challenging to paint large paintings on cold days, so I also paint snowscapes in the studio. When I do, my paintings are strongly influenced by my past experience observing light and color in the field. Some of my winter plein air paintings are included in my other collections: The Morton Arboretum and Schweikher House.
